Wolf creek what is it based on

Way to value women! Years later, backpackers began to go missing in Australia. A nineteen-year-old Australian couple vanished in on their way to a music festival. A twenty-one-year-old German woman went missing in January , followed by a young German couple in December of that year. Two women in their early twenties disappeared in April The corpses told a grisly tale.

Some of the women had been stabbed as many as fourteen times. Most had suffered brutal beatings, and the women showed signs of sexual assault. Police suspected the serial killer had spent considerable time with the backpackers, given the campsites that were found near the bodies. Milat was finally apprehended when he took on the wrong dude. In November , backpacker Paul Onions, 24, was hitchhiking in Australia when he was given a ride by a man who told him his name was Bill.

During the drive, Bill whipped out some rope and a gun, and told Onions he was being robbed. Onions fled, and managed to flag down a passing motorist and escape. Onions later identified Milat as his attacker.

He was convicted of all charges and given seven life sentences. While in prison, he cut off his little finger with a plastic knife, hoping to force the Australian courts to grant him an appeal. He tried to get the government to pay for his funeral. His marriage in the eighties ended due to domestic violence. Even when he was dying of cancer, Milat never admitted to any of the murders. The other inspiration for Wolf Creek was almost as charming.

Lees managed to escape and identify Murdoch, which led to his capture. Murdoch was previously charged with seven counts of abduction and rape in the case of a twelve-year-old girl and her mother, whom Murdoch allegedly tormented for twenty-five hours. Update: Murdoch's appeal was rejected in January I followed the reports of the trial and admired Joanne Lees' stoicism.

I believe it helped her to make an escape, but it often didn't help her before and during the trial. She has remained silent, withdrawn, not revealing her emotions which are nobody's business in my opinion. No big magazine spreads and TV shows, just four days of testimony during the trial. Unusual in our age of media hype and rampant disclosure And now, for the first time, she is talking to the media.

I found this terrific interview unfortunately the five page interview is no longer online , which confirms every impression I had of her.

I'm so impressed with this woman Joanne Lees is an exceptionally strong person who deserves our compassion and our admiration. I recommend the interview, and if you want the true "true story", read the book. Well, not quite. There sure are many parallels, enough for Murdoch's lawyers to prevent the movie from being released in the Northern Territory during the trial. But the true story above is not the only one that influenced the Wolf Creek movie. The character of Mick Taylor , the seemingly friendly and helpful bush bloke, is modelled on Ivan Milat.

Milat was a serial killer who picked up hitchhikers and took them into the woods where he tortured and killed them. These murders took place in the s in New South Wales, not in the Outback and have taken place in other form at other times in other parts of the world as well The director of the movie Greg McLean explained that two real-life murder cases inspired this film.

Greg used the stories of Ivan Milat in the s and Bradley Murdoch in for his film's screenplay. In an interview with Starburst Magazine, Greg McLean stated that the killer in his movie is the combined elements of true characters including a lot of Australian archetypal characters and cultural mythology, like Crocodile Dundee and Steve Irwin, and weaving those characters into a combination to come up with the character.

He further said that it is an interesting combination, which shows the repressed side of the country. When they come back the car is in the same direction. However, when night falls the car does a degree switch as they are facing the direction where they came from, as they watch the headlights of Mick's truck arrive. Quotes Mick Taylor : See? Crazy credits The producers would like to thank Frank, Marie and the entire Mclean family.

Alternate versions The film was released on DVD in the United Sates in both a rated and an unrated version, with the unrated version running roughly five minutes longer than the rated version. Two new scenes were added to the unrated version although both of these scenes are contained on the rated DVD as deleted scenes : a scene where Kristy Kestie Morassi wakes up next to Ben Nathan Phillips after the party, a scene where Liz Cassandra Magrath goes down into a well in Mick's yard and discovers decaying bodies.

Connections Edited into Picnic at Wolf Creek User reviews Review. Top review. Unrelenting, actually frightening. Wolf Creek is a fine example of a rare breed nowadays: a horror film that pulls no punches and makes no apologies for frightening and unnerving the audience. Three young people are hiking in the Australian Outback when they're unlucky enough to meet Mick Taylor played brilliantly by John Jarratt , one of the most twisted psychopaths to grace the big screen in years.

Mick is a guy who did some hunting at one time, is pretty good with a rifle, and is a survivalist with some possible military training All we know is that at some point he took up hunting people for his own amusement and found out he was quite good at it.

What makes this film frightening is how realistic and plausible the story is. Mick seems like a demon that could actually exist in the real world. He's not a super-genius serial killer always toying with the cops. He doesn't kill to fulfill some grandiose plan or message. He doesn't kill his victims in elaborate, unlikely scenarios or games. Rather, he's a pure sadist who just seems to enjoy watching pain, suffering and death.
